  1. Acrid—biting, caustic.
  2. Alterative—which establishes the healthy functions.
  3. Anodyne—quieting, easing pain.
  4. Anti-bilious—correcting the bile.
  5. Anti-lithic—preventing the formation of gravel, or stone.
  6. Anti-septic—against or preventing mortification.
  7. Aperient—laxative, or gently cathartic.
  8. Anti-scorbutic—useful in scurvy.
  9. Anti-spasmodic—against spasm, calming nervous irritation.
  10. Aromatic—agreeable, spicy.
  11. Astringent—shortening the fibres, strengthening.
  12. Balsamic—mild, healing, stimulant.
  13. Carminative—expelling wind.
  14. Cathartic—purgative, cleansing the bowels.
  15. Demulcent—sheathing, lubricating, preventing irritation.
  16. Deobstruent—bettering the secretions, or removing obstructions. 
  17.  Diaphoretic—producing insensible perspiration.
  18. Discutient—dissolving, discussing.
  19. Diuretic—increasing the urine. Emetic—causing vomiting.
  20. Emollient—softening, causing warmth and moisture.
  21. Errhine—discharging at the nostrils.
  22. Expectorant—producing a discharge from the lungs.
  23. Febrifuge—dispelling fever, allaying fever heat.
  24. Herpetic—curing skin diseases.
  25. Narcotic—stupafying, procuring sleep.
  26. Nervine—strengthening the nerves.
  27. Pectoral—useful in diseases of the lungs.
  28. Refrigerant—diminishing animal temperature.
  29. Rubefacient—producing heat and redness of the skin.
  30. Stimulant—exciting action on the system.
  31. Stomachic—good for the stomach.
  32. Styptic—preventing bleeding.
  33. Sudorific—causing sweat.
  34. Tonic—permanently strengthening the system.
  35. Vermifuge—destroying worms.
